KILBRENNAN - HISTORIC PIPING SCHOOL

Historic Kilbrennan was home to the Rankin School of Piping, the Rankins being the hereditary pipers to the Macleans. The school ceased in the late 18th century but in the field above the house you’ll find a commemorative cairn, unveiled in 2023.

These traditional schools were more than just ‘how to play the bagpipes’. Little was written down in those days but instead music, poetry and rhetoric went from generation to generation, initially via the bardic tradition and later by the memory training taught at these ‘Schools of Piping’.
